A brief picture of a long history...

In 1839 the South Australian Agricultural Society was formed "for the advancement of agricultural and pastoral knowledge, and to promote the development of the natural resources of our noble colony."

The Society merged with an early horticultural organisation in 1844 and staged its first combined exhibition in a marquee in Botanic Park - this was the birth of the Agricultural & Horticultural Society. The Royal prefix was granted by Queen Victoria in 1869.

Night shows at the Showground and the Jubilee Building on Frome Street, became very popular in the 1890's when electricity was introduced to South Australia.

The Society moved to its current location at Wayville in 1925 and in 1926 the first Showbags were introduced and given away as "sample bags".

In 1998 the Government presented the Society with an extended lease of the Wayville site, granting use of the Showground until at least 2062.

The Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society of South Australia Inc is the organiser of the State's largest event, the Royal Adelaide Show, which attracts approximately 40% of South Australia's population. Further to this, the Adelaide Showground provides facilities to more than 100 exhibitions, conventions and banquets each year.

Our Charter

To contribute to the success and promotion of Primary Industry, predominantly in South Australia through the staging of events and the rewarding of excellence.

This is achieved through:

• Ensuring the continuing success and relevance of the Royal Adelaide Show to both industry and the community.
• Staging corporate, industry and community based events and exhibitions.
• Successfully operating and managing an exhibition, convention and public entertainment facility.
• Educating the community about the importance of Primary Industry in the economy and in their lives through bringing urban and country Australia together.
